The first time I saw this band’s name, SWEEPING DEATH, it made me think of Metallica’s “Creeping Death”. The name made me think thrash. Was I right in thinking so?
I am a word buff so when I find a band name that excites me I want to know the reason behind the choice. So how did you pick your name?
-SWEEPING DEATH is the combination of two words with different meanings for us. “Sweeping” reflects our Style of Guitar playing: fast, melodic and virtous. It is a guitar technique wich we love to incoperate in our songs. “Death”…In the end it all columinates in death. For us Death is not only the end of life, it became a symbol for what we love the most, it is our sign for love towards the metal scene in general. The Music, the people and the passion you can expirience in this context.
There are so many genres and sub-genres today that it is hard to keep track of them all. So what was it that made you pick the style you play?
-I think we never really thought about it that way. I´d rather say the style picked us. It is what we are capabel of doing without overthinking it to much. But we this journey has just begun. The Style we want to play, it hast to be destillated first. It will take time but in the end, we will have something we can call our own.
What influences you in creating your music? What is/has been the single greatest influence?
-First we started like many bands, as a cover band. Of course, that left its scars if you want. Our earliest Inflluences would be Metallica (Old and New), Iron Maiden and other classic bands. But times have changed and I´d say the greatest Inspiration for me and for our style are the unique members of the band. Everyone has a very own taste in music and that fire for discovering new bands and new styles is contagious. Now the inspiration come from different directions wether it is Beethoven, Opeth or Tribvlation.
How important is it to have a message as a band?
-I think it this is the most important part of a band. I mean in the position I am right now, it is kinda hypocritic to say. Our first Album doesn´t has that overall massage, I´d tatoo on my forhead. But this is a process and as it is the same for the music it will take some more time. In the end I want to be on stage with something to say.
Is image an important factor to the bands appearance?
-Of course. The Image has to reflect your artistic vision of the band. For me the clothes on stage are a way to enhance that side of me. A side I can´t show during my everyday life. So when I go on stage and look in the mirror and see kind of a more expressive version of myself it helps me onstage. But thats just me…If you´re feelin it in a jeans and a white shirt then go for it. But overall the image is very important. Often Times it is the first thing people see from you without hearing a single note. Make them hungry for more!
How important is it to have an album cover that stands out to grab people’s attention in this day and age?
-Same as for the Outfit the cover can help to get some attention for the music. But I think most important is what you see in the artwork. The cover gives the Songs you play a face and if you don´t stand behind it, nobody will. I´d say our cover is kinda special but that is not to get the attention of the people, it is because we like it.
What kind of respect do you get from your local scene?
-We we´re able to make a few new friends the past gigs. And also to convince a few people to buy our album so I think that´s good. Ecpecially our friendship with local brothers “Running Death” has given us a confidence boost since they seem to be the biggest fans of our album haha. When we play shows togethers it´s always a really special atmosphere. If you never heard of them, go check em out!
How massive is it to get response from places you have never heard of?
-It´s really cool to hear from people all around that the world that they listend to the album. The Imagination that Astoria is played under dozen diffrent suns is quite overwhelming. The Process that your Ideas are becoming a part of someone elses life is one of the best feelings i´ve ever felt to be honest.
Is playing live still a great way to get new fans to discover you?
-Yes! The Music banned on tape is just a part of it all. A big part but not everything. To celebrate the music live and to perform is what the people should experience. But of course in times of Spotify and YouTube your Internet presence is also important.
What does the future have in its womb?
-First of all we are right now in the process of making our first music video, wich we are really ecited about. Also we have a good couple of shows upcoming. The Plan is to record Ep/Album #2 somewhere in the end of 2017. We have already begun to collect first ideas and experimenting with ideas, so beware of the Sweeping Death coming to you, too!
